Overview
The Pipeline Engineer provides engineering design, analysis, and field support for natural gas transmission pipelines and associated facilities. This role oversees third-party engineering firms and supports projects from initial development through construction, testing, commissioning, and closeout to ensure safe, compliant, and reliable pipeline systems.
Responsibilities
- Lead and support pipeline design and engineering activities in accordance with applicable federal regulations and industry standards.
- Perform and support class location studies, MAOP verification, wall thickness design, and HCA evaluations.
- Participate in HAZOP and formal risk review sessions for pipelines, document findings, and assist with mitigation measures.
- Support the design, specification, and technical review of M&R facilities.
- Review P&IDs, equipment layouts, control philosophies, and vendor submittals.
- Support materials selection for line pipe, fittings, valves, and coatings.
- Prepare and review technical bid tabulations and award recommendations.
- Contribute to vendor selection and award decisions through technical evaluations.
- Manage geotechnical investigations and review third-party HDD designs.
- Provide vendor surveillance for major pipeline and station equipment.
- Develop and review Inspection and Test Plans and Quality Control Plans.
- Coordinate with inspectors and suppliers to verify compliance with specifications.
- Support the development and review of welding procedures and repair strategies.
- Review and support radiography and other NDE methods.
- Assist in defining hydrotest section limits and support hydrotest execution.
- Support cathodic protection system design and commissioning.
- Coordinate, review, and interpret DCVG and ACVG surveys.
- Review and validate as-built drawings and ensure completeness of job books.
- Collaborate closely with construction and operations teams.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in pipeline engineering or construction support.
- Working knowledge of natural gas transmission pipelines and station facilities.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications accurately.
- Strong communication skills to work effectively with teams and supervise third-party companies.
- Demonstrated ability to apply federal regulations and industry standards in pipeline design.
- Proven experience supporting the full lifecycle of pipeline projects.
