Overview

The Level 1 Maintenance Technician at the Chicago Plant is responsible for assisting the maintenance team with troubleshooting, repairing, and performing routine preventative maintenance on all equipment, including the building's interior and exterior. This role requires basic mechanical and welding tasks, as well as novice electrical work under supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a basic level of mechanical expertise regarding chain repairs, sprockets, belts, gearbox, shaft alignments, and replacing pumps and pump seals.
  • Assist in the performance and documentation of preventative maintenance (PM's).
  • Perform or assist in troubleshooting, corrective, and preventative maintenance to all equipment, systems, and building.
  • Maintain and perform basic MIG, TIG, Arc, and Spot Welding with fire watch supervision.
  • Weld metal components together to fabricate and/or repair products or equipment according to layouts, blueprints, or work orders.
  • Repair broken or cracked parts, fill holes, and increase the size of metal parts.
  • Use brazing and a variety of arc and gas welding equipment.
  • Position and clamp together components of fabricated metal products preparatory to weld.
  • Ensure proper coverage for fire watch is in place prior to performing hot work actions.
  • Learn basic electrical knowledge and troubleshooting under direct supervision of a certified electrician.
  • Follow all maintenance safety protocols to ensure all team members operate safely.
  • Inform the supervisor or manager of any safety-related issues, damaged equipment, or spare parts needed.
  • Understand and perform all procedures on equipment per training and attend all required training sessions.
  • Ensure housekeeping in the repair shop and around the equipment is maintained.
  • Work closely with production employees to ensure safe, proper operation of production equipment.
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement through support of business and process improvements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including general housekeeping.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required (trade school).
  • 2 or more years of experience in the manufacturing/construction environment.
  • 2 or more years of sit-down propane forklift and scissor lift experience required.
  • Skilled in the use of all hand and power tools, such as multimeters, ammeters, electric/pneumatic drills, grinders, pullers, plasma cutting, torch, welders.
  • Some experience in metal fabrication, using a torch, plasma cutter, welder.
  • Some experience in MIG, TIG, Arc, and spot welding.
  • Basic verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.
  • Organized with an attention to detail.
  • Time management skills with the proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Basic analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong understanding of applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements.
  • Must have reliable transportation.

Additional Information

  • This job operates inside a warehouse and outdoor area where the temperature may vary.
  • Prolonged periods of standing per shift.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in hot and cold climates and in an environment with many noises and odors.
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as ear plugs, safety vest, hard hat, steel toe shoes, gloves, and other job-specific required PPE.
