Overview
The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic position is located in the Engineering Service at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago, IL. This role involves the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems, requiring a current EPA approved Universal Certification.
Responsibilities
- Install and recognize the cause of faulty refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
- Make repairs on large systems that provide various air conditioning functions.
- Calculate airflow and pressure-temperature characteristics for different systems.
- Locate and repair faulty equipment swiftly to minimize inoperative time.
- Perform complex repairs including installing and fitting connecting rods and crank shafts.
- Overhaul valves by adjusting or replacing gaskets, springs, and other components.
- Check the refrigeration cycle of commercial and industrial systems.
- Examine equipment components for leaks and perform prescribed test procedures.
- Identify faulty equipment causes and make repairs on large systems.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must have a current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA approved Universal Certification.
- Evidence of training or experience sufficient to perform the duties of this position.
- Experience can include paid and unpaid work, including volunteer work.

Additional Information
- Work Schedule: 3:30 PM to 12:00 AM Wednesday-Sunday.
- Physical requirements include carrying equipment that seldom weighs over 50 pounds.
- Regularly required to work outdoors and exposed to temperature extremes.
