Overview
The Mechanic B will pursue a career path qualifying as a Mechanic A, performing electrical or mechanical maintenance on power plant components and equipment. They work on mechanical equipment, maintain power piping systems, and perform electrical maintenance tasks, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
Responsibilities
- Perform mechanical and electrical maintenance tasks across facility equipment and systems.
- Safely operate and maintain hand and power tools for routine and emergency repairs.
- Carry out standard maintenance functions, including inspections, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance.
- Apply and follow safe work practices in all tasks, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, procedures and policies.
- Work assigned shifts that may include rotating schedules, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
- Obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) within one year of placement.
- Obtain a NYS/NYC Asbestos Handlers License within one year of placement.
- Use various tools, field power tools, and precision equipment.
- Write accurate and concise reports.
- Read and interpret schematic drawings and engineering prints.
- Maintain a working knowledge of confined space entry, oxy-acetylene torch cutting, rigging, reading mechanical drawings, industrial safety, and basic electricity.
- Perform asbestos abatements and maintenance associated with powerplant equipment based on operational needs.
- Occasionally operate a Con Edison vehicle.
- Successfully advance through career path training.
Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED and 5 years' experience in a power plant environment or merchant shipping, or Associate's Degree and 4 years' experience, or Bachelor's Degree and 2 years' experience.
- Ability to learn to read blue prints and sketches and demonstrate good oral and written communication skills.
- Prior demonstrated experience in general construction, control systems, mechanical work and/or electrical work.
- Experience in installing rigid tubing for pneumatic and hydraulic applications.
- Ability to use and be trained in the use of special tools and equipment for maintenance of power plant equipment.
- Knowledgeable in industrial safety.
- Familiarity with rotating equipment troubleshooting and maintenance.
- Possess a high regard for personal accountability, be well organized, detail-oriented, and dedicated to customer service.
- Exercise initiative, be flexible to handle multiple assignments, and meet critical deadlines.
- Familiarity with computer systems and working proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Project, and Word.
- Maximo experience preferred.
Additional Information
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
