Overview
The Roundhouse Mechanic I position involves assisting with inspections, maintenance, and repairs to various railroad equipment, including steam and diesel locomotives. The role requires teamwork, effective communication, and a commitment to safety and cleanliness in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Assist with inspections, maintenance, and repairs to locomotives and related equipment.
- Work in a team environment with other mechanics on repairs.
- Utilize hand tools and power tools safely and efficiently.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections on locomotives and passenger coaches.
- Install special equipment for train safety and improvement.
- Maintain a clean work environment and ensure equipment is presentable.
- Perform related duties as directed.
- Interact professionally with the public and coworkers.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Two years of experience in the repair and service of locomotives, automobiles, trucks, or heavy equipment.
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including weekends and holidays.
- Knowledge of methods and procedures for servicing steam, gasoline, and diesel equipment.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of safety standards for passenger trains and related equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Skill in operating a variety of hand and power tools used in mechanical repairs.
