Overview
The Equipment Mechanic III position at TxDOT's Fleet Operations Division involves performing repair, maintenance, and inspection work for fleet vehicles and heavy equipment used in highway and bridge construction. The role requires independent work on various assignments and interaction with governmental agencies and contractors.
Responsibilities
- Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts including air brake and anti-locking systems.
- Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.
- Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into the fleet information management system.
- Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways and bridges.
- Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of vehicle lights.
- Performs preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles and equipment.
- Performs quality assurance and analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
- Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features.
- Troubleshoots, tests, and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
- Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work.
- Trains less experienced technicians and leads them.
- Travels and performs work in other shops throughout the state as required.
- Performs duties of the Shop Coordinator in their absence.
Requirements
- No degree/diploma required.
- 7 years of experience in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
- Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience.
- Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Must have a Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or obtain it within 120 calendar days.
