Overview
We are seeking an experienced 1st Class Shipfitter to join our shipyard team in Newport News, Virginia. The ideal candidate will possess advanced knowledge of shipboard structural fabrication, blueprint interpretation, and installation of steel components in accordance with shipbuilding specifications.
Responsibilities
- Read and interpret shipyard drawings, blueprints, sketches, and work packages.
- Lay out, fabricate, fit, and assemble structural steel components for marine vessels and modules.
- Install foundations, bulkheads, decks, frames, stiffeners, brackets, and other structural assemblies.
- Measure, mark, and cut materials using hand tools, power tools, and thermal cutting equipment.
- Perform tack welding as required to secure components prior to final welding.
- Utilize chain falls, come-alongs, jacks, wedges, and other fitting equipment to align structures.
- Verify dimensions and tolerances using precision measuring instruments.
- Work from engineering drawings and specifications to ensure quality workmanship.
- Conduct inspections of completed work to ensure compliance with shipyard and customer standards.
- Collaborate with welders, riggers, supervisors, and other trades to complete projects efficiently.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment in accordance with OSHA and shipyard safety regulations.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by supervision.
Requirements
- Minimum of 4 years of shipfitting experience in a shipbuilding or ship repair environment.
- Ability to pass a hands-on shipfitter trade test.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting complex blueprints and structural drawings.
- Experience with shipboard structural fabrication and installation.
- Knowledge of shipyard safety procedures and quality standards.
- Ability to accurately use measuring tools and layout equipment.
- Strong understanding of fit-up techniques and steel fabrication practices.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
