Job Description

A welder is a skilled tradesperson responsible for permanently joining metal parts, components, or structures using intense heat. They work across a wide variety of industries, including construction, manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and shipbuilding.

Because structural safety and precision are critical, a welder’s daily tasks go far beyond just melting metal. Their primary responsibilities include:

Technical Responsibilities • Reading Blueprints and Schematics: Reviewing and interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols to plan layouts, determine material needs, and understand exact dimensions.

  • Material Preparation: Cutting, shaping, and beveling metal pieces using saws, torches, and angle grinders. They also clean metal surfaces of rust, paint, and grease to prevent weld contamination.

Selecting and Setting Up Equipment: Determining the most effective welding method—such as MIG (Metal Inert Gas), TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas), or Stick (Shielded Metal Arc Welding)—and calibrating machine parameters like voltage, amperage, and gas flow rates.

  • Flux cored arc welding (FCAW), also known as dual shield welding, is a semi-automatic arc welding process that is similar to metal active gas (MAG) welding. FCAW uses a continuous wire fed electrode, a constant-voltage welding power supply, and similar equipment to MAG welding.
