Overview
The MW Shop Mechanic position at the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) involves servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing various equipment and machinery in compliance with safety standards. LIRR is the largest and oldest continuously operating commuter railroad in the United States, serving millions of riders annually.
Responsibilities
- Service, troubleshoot, and repair all LIRR on/off rail track equipment, trucks, and cranes.
- Service, troubleshoot, and repair all components of diesel engines and heavy equipment.
- Service and repair equipment's hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, electronic, pneumatic and HVAC systems.
- Perform all service and repairs in shop and field conditions including all inclement weather.
- Perform work in a safe and professional manner.
- Complete and submit service tickets/labor reports.
- Attend company-training classes.
- Perform all house cleaning associated with service/repair.
- Inform supervision of work progress and safety issues.
Requirements
- A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED).
- Eight years of mechanical experience in servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing automobiles or construction equipment.
- Certificate from technical trade school with emphasis on diesel engines and heavy equipment repair.
- Strong knowledge of diesel and gas engine repair, overhaul and troubleshooting.
- Strong knowledge of 12/24 volt starting/charging systems, cooling systems, small engine repair, transmission repair, differential repair/overhaul, transfer case repair/overhaul, heavy-duty front end and suspension repairs, and automotive heating and air-conditioning repairs.
- Ability to read and interpret hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical prints.
- Knowledge of air/hydraulic brake system troubleshooting, repair and overhaul.
- Possession of a full set of mechanics tools.
