Overview

The Equipment Mechanic III position in TxDOT's Fleet Operations Division involves performing repair, maintenance, and inspection work on fleet vehicles and heavy equipment. This role is crucial for maintaining operational efficiency and safety on Texas highways and bridges.

Responsibilities

  • Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts including air brake and anti-locking systems.
  • Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.
  • Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into the fleet information management system.
  • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways and bridges.
  • Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of vehicle lights.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs quality assurance and analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepares vehicles for use by checking required safety features.
  • Troubleshoots, tests, and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
  • Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles and equipment.
  • Trains less experienced technicians.
  • Travels and performs work in other shops throughout the state as required.
  • Leads and trains less experienced technicians.
  • Performs duties of the Shop Coordinator in their absence.

Requirements

  • No degree/diploma required.
  • 7 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience.
  • Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must have a Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or obtain one within 120 calendar days.
