Overview

The B&B Mechanic (Carpenter) at Long Island Rail Road is responsible for the maintenance and construction of all structural assets throughout the territory, including repairing wooden railroad bridges and performing various carpentry and construction tasks. The Long Island Rail Road is the largest and oldest continuously operating commuter railroad in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Repair wooden railroad bridges, trestles, and tunnel supports.
  • Repair/replace structural members of bridges.
  • Perform a variety of concrete and conventional carpentry and construction work.
  • Handle both hand and power tools.
  • Dig trenches and holes.

Requirements

  • Must have a four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC).
  • Prior carpentry or related construction experience.
  • Must have a valid Drivers License and be able to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) permit at time of hire.
  • Ability to demonstrate good oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to read simple blueprints or drawings.
  • Must provide own hand-tools and customary carpentry tools.
