Overview

The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a Welder II to join their Utilities and Energy Management department, which provides essential energy services to the university. The role involves performing skilled welding work in a mechanical and electrical utility environment, contributing to the maintenance and operation of power generation and chilling station equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist plant mechanics in the installation and repair of power plant and chilling station equipment.
  • Maintain shop areas, work sites, equipment, and tools in a safe and orderly fashion.
  • Identify, report, and correct safety hazards.
  • Perform confined space entries and elevated work.
  • Operate cranes, personnel lifts, and forklifts.
  • Perform preventative and breakdown maintenance on welding shop equipment and tools.
  • Inspect, erect, utilize, and break down scaffolding.
  • Lay out, cut, fit, and install various metal types and assemble structural, pressure containment, and piping fitting.
  • Estimate material and labor requirements and procure materials.
  • Read and understand engineering and fabrication drawings and welding procedures.
  • Perform certified welding in accordance with ASME and AWS codes.
  • Train fellow personnel on operational and maintenance procedures.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Five years of related journey level experience in welding or completion of a formal certification welding program.
  • Required certification in welding performance qualification tests in accordance with ASME and AWS codes.
  • Must possess a class 'C' operator's driver's license and provide a current three-year driving record.

Additional Information

  • Full-time position with a schedule of 40 hours a week, Monday - Friday from 06:00 AM to 02:30 PM.
  • Location: Austin, TX.
  • May require work in confined spaces, tunnels, and manholes, and extended shifts including nights, holidays, and weekends.
