Overview
The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a Welder II to join their Utilities and Energy Management department, which provides essential energy services to the university. The role involves performing skilled welding work in a mechanical and electrical utility environment, contributing to the maintenance and operation of power generation and chilling station equipment.
Responsibilities
- Assist plant mechanics in the installation and repair of power plant and chilling station equipment.
- Maintain shop areas, work sites, equipment, and tools in a safe and orderly fashion.
- Identify, report, and correct safety hazards.
- Perform confined space entries and elevated work.
- Operate cranes, personnel lifts, and forklifts.
- Perform preventative and breakdown maintenance on welding shop equipment and tools.
- Inspect, erect, utilize, and break down scaffolding.
- Lay out, cut, fit, and install various metal types and assemble structural, pressure containment, and piping fitting.
- Estimate material and labor requirements and procure materials.
- Read and understand engineering and fabrication drawings and welding procedures.
- Perform certified welding in accordance with ASME and AWS codes.
- Train fellow personnel on operational and maintenance procedures.
Requirements
- High school graduation or GED.
- Five years of related journey level experience in welding or completion of a formal certification welding program.
- Required certification in welding performance qualification tests in accordance with ASME and AWS codes.
- Must possess a class 'C' operator's driver's license and provide a current three-year driving record.

Additional Information
- Full-time position with a schedule of 40 hours a week, Monday - Friday from 06:00 AM to 02:30 PM.
- Location: Austin, TX.
- May require work in confined spaces, tunnels, and manholes, and extended shifts including nights, holidays, and weekends.
