Overview

The City of Chicago is seeking a Construction Laborer in the Department of Aviation's Facilities Section. This position involves performing physically demanding labor and assisting skilled trades workers on various construction, maintenance, and repair projects.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares work sites by digging and backfilling trenches.
  • Removes dirt and clears obstructions from around work areas.
  • Sets and removes braces and shoring equipment to prevent cave-ins.
  • Installs, repairs, and removes concrete and masonry walls.
  • Demolishes old pavement, sidewalks, curbs, and catch basins as directed.
  • Repairs old pavement, sidewalks, curbs, and catch basins as directed.
  • Operates small construction equipment as required.
  • Excavates and grades ground for concrete leveling.
  • Assists in the construction of scaffolding up to 200 feet high.
  • Loads and delivers scaffolding and materials as assigned.
  • Operates and maintains various power tools and equipment.
  • Mixes and pours concrete as directed.
  • Loads and unloads materials and equipment from trucks.
  • Helps lift and place materials into trenches and below-grade areas.
  • Removes materials from worksites as directed.
  • Assists skilled trades workers by supplying needed tools and materials.
  • Sets up safety measures around work sites.
  • Marks work sites and identifies underground utilities.
  • Directs traffic around work sites.
  • Notifies customers of water service interruptions.

Requirements

  • Completion of a Department of Labor Laborer Apprenticeship Program or City of Chicago Laborer Apprenticeship Program.
  • At least two years of work experience as a Laborer performing construction work with the City of Chicago.
  • At least four years of work experience as a Construction Laborer.
  • Requires a valid State of Illinois Driver’s License.
  • Must pass a Ground Motor Vehicle Operating Regulation Basic Driving test within six months of hire.
  • Must pass a background check and Security Threat Assessment.
