Overview

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is seeking a Construction Laborer to assist in maintaining the city's infrastructure. DSNY is the nation's largest municipal sanitation agency, responsible for keeping New York City healthy, safe, and clean.

Responsibilities

  • Use a wide variety of heavy-duty, motor-powered equipment.
  • Perform work in construction, repair, and maintenance of water supply distribution systems.
  • Engage in the removal and replacement of broken drainage and sewer pipes.
  • Repair broken water mains and leaking water services.
  • Break pavements with hand or power-driven tools.
  • Excavate and refill in the performance of work.
  • Engage in the shoring and sheeting of excavations.
  • Mix and use concrete as part of construction and repair work.
  • Flush, clean, and excavate culverts, sewers, and drain basins.
  • Operate various types of motor equipment.
  • Keep records of work assignments and progress.
  • Load and unload equipment and supplies.

Requirements

  • Three years of satisfactory, full-time experience of a mechanical or construction nature.
  • Completion of a two-year apprenticeship in repair and maintenance of water supply distribution systems.
  • Possession of a New York State Class B Commercial Driver License or a Class D Motor Vehicle Driver License.
  • Valid New York State Learner's Permit for a Class B Commercial Driver License.

Additional Information

  • New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
  • City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may reside in certain counties.
