Overview

The Carpenter position at UCLA involves performing a variety of skilled carpentry duties under the supervision of the Sr. Superintendent of Carpentry Shop. The role supports the university's mission by maintaining and improving campus buildings and infrastructure through efficient and customer-focused service.

Responsibilities

  • Build, repair, and install various carpentry-related projects.
  • Construct cabinets and repair wall partitions, floors, and ceiling systems.
  • Set door jambs and hang doors.
  • Install metal window frames and insulate walls.
  • Hang drywall and install all types of door hardware including panic hardware.
  • Construct concrete forms and scaffolding for special projects.
  • Operate and maintain carpentry tools and equipment.
  • Read blueprints to carry out assignments.
  • Work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction.
  • Maintain appropriate and safe working practices.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of materials, equipment, methods, and tools of the Carpenter's trade.
  • Knowledge of Class A construction, UBC, OSHA, fire codes, construction procedures, and ADA requirements.
  • Familiarity with standard safety practices and equipment related to carpentry.
  • Skill in reading plan specifications and blueprints.
  • Basic mathematics skills for calculating layouts and offsets.
  • Writing skills to complete reports accurately.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
  • Ability to install metal stud and drywall partitions, suspended ceilings, and trim work.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems in structural woodwork.
  • Completion of a certified 4-year trade-related apprenticeship program or equivalent experience.
  • Possession of a valid CA noncommercial Class C License.

Additional Information

  • Work schedule is from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Position is union/policy covered under K4-Skilled Crafts-UCLA.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon background checks and a satisfactory driving record.
