We are seeking a hardworking and safety-conscious Welder Helper to join a heavy manufacturing facility in Navasota, TX. In this entry-to-mid-level position, you will work closely with certified structural and pressure-containment welders, providing the critical logistical, preparation, and material handling support necessary to keep the production line moving safely and efficiently. This role is ideal for an individual with strong physical stamina, a foundational knowledge of metalwork, and an eagerness to learn professional industrial welding and fabrication processes from the ground up.
Responsibilities: Prepare raw steel, pipe, and aluminum parts for welding by grinding, drilling, scraping, and cutting to exact dimensions using industrial hand and power tools. Assist welders in the layout, positioning, alignment, and clamping of heavy industrial components. Perform basic tack-welding to secure pieces for final structural welding. Safely load, unload, and move heavy workpieces, raw steel, and finished components across the shop floor using overhead cranes, hoists, and forklifts. Set up welding machines, change out welding wire spools, replace shielding gas tanks, and maintain oxy-acetylene torch equipment under supervisor guidance. Perform visual post-weld inspections, cleaning finished welds by removing slag, spatter, and scale using wire brushes and grinders to ensure components meet strict quality standards. Maintain a highly organized, clean, and risk-free workstation in accordance with plant safety guidelines. Properly store specialized tools and safety gear. Continuously wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)???including welding shields, respirator masks, ear protection, and steel-toed boots???and immediately report any shop hazards.
Working hours: 6:00 PM - 6:00 AM
Skills: Prior exposure to basic MIG, TIG, or Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) processes, or completion of/enrollment in a vocational welding program. Previous experience or active certifications for operating overhead bridge cranes, hoists, and industrial forklifts. Foundational ability to look at mechanical drawings, structural blueprints, or basic weld symbols and identify layout dimensions.
Education: High School
Experience: 0-1 years
Qualifications: Minimum of 1 year of experience working in a heavy manufacturing, industrial fabrication shop, or construction environment. Demonstrated experience safely operating manual and power tools, specifically heavy angle grinders, chop saws, and pneumatic tools. Ability to stand, bend, and kneel continuously throughout an 8- to 12-hour shift in a non-climate-controlled shop environment. Must be able to comfortably lift, pull, or push up to 50 pounds. Ability to follow strict verbal and written technical instructions, safety protocols, and manufacturing routing steps. Comfort using basic arithmetic and standard tape measures to accurately verify material lengths and structural alignment.
