Overview
The Shipfitter Welder position involves laying out and fabricating metal structural parts for ships, working from blueprints and templates, and requires the ability to use various welding and cutting tools. The role includes responsibilities such as aligning parts, installing structural accessories, and performing welding operations in various conditions.
Responsibilities
- Lays out and fabricates metal structural parts for ship hulls.
- Works from blueprints or templates to position parts on metal.
- Marks reference lines for alignment of parts.
- Positions parts in the hull of the ship with assistance.
- Aligns parts using jacks, turnbuckles, and other tools.
- Marks locations for holes and installs temporary fasteners.
- Installs packing, gaskets, and structural accessories.
- May prepare molds and templates for nonstandard parts.
- May tack weld clips and brackets prior to permanent welding.
- May roll, bend, cut, and shape heavy metal parts using machinery.
- Interprets welding blueprints and performs layout for welding.
- Uses various hand and power tools safely and efficiently.
- Welds with both wire feed and stick in all positions.
- Operates large machinery such as metal shears and brakes.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and/or industrial marine welding experience.
- Ability to work under deadlines and schedule pressures.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
- Mechanical abilities and aptitude.
- Must be able to climb ladders and work aloft with fall prevention equipment.
- Ability to lift up to 70 pounds and carry for short distances.
- Ability to work in awkward positions and varying surfaces.
Additional Information
- Open-air working conditions with noise and temperature variations.
- Must wear hearing, eye, and head protection along with proper PPE.
- Some climbing (up to 100 feet) and lifting (up to 50 lbs.) involved.
- Work involves hot and hazardous materials.
- Work aboard ships, both on and offshore, including confined spaces.
- Some travel required.
