Overview

The Mechanic Master will perform mechanical work at the master level on the district's yellow and white fleet vehicles, focusing on safety, cost control, and responsiveness to operational needs to ensure safe and reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled routine mechanical work on school buses and white fleet vehicles according to preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Maintain, repair, overhaul, and/or replace diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic and air brake systems, and other vehicle components.
  • Diagnose fleet vehicle issues using diagnostic equipment, inspection, and road testing.
  • Respond to service calls and operate a wrecker to tow broken down vehicles.
  • Operate cutting and welding equipment as required.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation during evenings and weekends.
  • Drive a school bus as a substitute when required.
  • Conduct vehicle inspections as required by the state and issue certified vehicle safe inspector decals.
  • Comply with all shop rules and safety measures.
  • Perform general housekeeping duties to keep the shop area clean and safe.
  • Complete work orders, prepare routine reports, and maintain files using fleet vehicle maintenance software.
  • Communicate with the Parts Department regarding needed parts and supplies for vehicle repairs.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Texas CDL Driver's License, Class A or B, with P and S endorsements or must be obtained within 120 days of hire.
  • Pass an Annual Physical (DOT) Department of Transportation.
  • Texas School Bus Driver Certification or obtain within 120 days.
  • Certification HFC - 134A or must be able to obtain within 1 year of hire.
  • Valid Texas Vehicle Inspector's Certificate or must be obtained within one year of hire.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as a skilled mechanic in maintenance and repair of automotive equipment.
  • Working knowledge of methods, tools, equipment, and techniques used in automotive repair and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair routine and complex problems on automotive vehicles.
  • Ability to operate equipment and tools associated with the trade.
  • Ability to operate a computer and prepare routine reports.

Additional Information

  • Work inside and outside in temperature extremes and around moving machinery.
  • Availability after hours, weekends, and holidays is required.
  • On-call situations to be expected.
