Overview
The Mechanic - Plumber position at Columbia University involves providing effective responses to maintenance tasks, ensuring the safety and repair of building conditions, and performing various skilled trades. The role requires a strong background in repair and maintenance with the ability to work independently on complex systems.
Responsibilities
- Provide immediate and effective response to work assigned by supervisor.
- Ensure work is completed in a good workmanship-like manner.
- Maintain physical condition of the building in a safe and good repair.
- Ensure all building certifications and licenses are properly displayed and updated.
- Perform all duties of an Assistant Mechanic and Mechanic Trainee.
- Demonstrate required knowledge and safe use of equipment and tools.
- Accurately read blueprints, schematics, and diagrams.
- Work independently with complex building systems without supervision.
- Respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis as required.
- Assist in planning for maintenance repair.
- Conduct periodic inspections of individual rooms and common areas.
- Maintain accurate records of daily assignments and follow work order process.
- Effectively perform duties as required by operating and computerized management systems.
- Recommend products and equipment for assigned jobs.
- Participate in preventive maintenance programs and development of quality standards.
- Maintain records for compliance with codes and regulations.
- Order supplies according to established procedures.
- Assist in evaluating new equipment for purchase.
- Calculate quantity of materials needed and requisition supplies.
- Perform all related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
- Satisfactory passing of applicable tests.
- Three years of experience in trades and/or technical discipline or completion of university approved training program.
- Must have all applicable licenses and permits.
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, regulations, and technical documents.
- Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to perform duties on ladders and scaffolding, indoors and outdoors.
- Ability to lift a maximum of 50 lbs. and move heavier objects with assisted devices.
