Job Description

Overview

The City of Dallas is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic to perform mechanical repairs and maintenance on gasoline and diesel-powered heavy equipment, ensuring operational readiness. This position offers competitive benefits, growth opportunities, and a vibrant work culture.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance and diagnose malfunctions of heavy equipment using electronic or mechanical testing equipment.
  • Repair and maintain heavy equipment including excavators, forklifts, earthmovers, and more.
  • Use welding equipment to repair or fabricate items for heavy equipment.
  • Drive a heavy equipment truck to retrieve or repair broken equipment in the field.
  • Remove, disassemble, rebuild, repair, assemble, and install units such as transmissions and engines on heavy equipment.
  • Tune and adjust parts and settings to enhance equipment performance.
  • Troubleshoot electrical systems using schematics.
  • Document and track daily labor and work orders.
  • Monitor inventory of parts and equipment and place orders as necessary.
  • Train and serve as lead worker for lower level mechanics.
  • Perform state mandated inspections.
  • Work varying shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of experience in maintenance and repair of heavy equipment involving diesel engines and/or hydraulic systems.
  • Valid driver's license with good driving record.
  • Must obtain a class A or B CDL within probationary period.
  • Ability to lift up to seventy-five (75) pounds.
  • Thorough knowledge of materials, tools, and principles used in the repair of heavy construction and landfill.
