Overview
The Melt Shop Operator is primarily responsible for maintaining and stocking consumables for the Furnace or Caster, performing general housekeeping duties, assisting other furnace operators, and may be responsible for collecting and running slag samples. Responsibilities
- Unload trucks and stock supplies and/or consumables.
- Operate/stock temperature and sampling devices for taking temperatures, oxygen readings, and steel samples.
- May clean out slag pots/pits as needed.
- Assist in maintaining refractory by patching or gunning.
- Maintain runner/tap hole.
- Build and add electrodes.
- Record data in production systems.
- Communicate with team members.
- Perform daily preventative maintenance and maintain records on vehicles and mobile equipment.
- Assist in training coworkers as needed.
- Operate mobile equipment to transfer product and materials while following safety rules.
- Perform general 5S activities in the work area.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to read, write, and carry out instructions.
- Specific working knowledge of the steelmaking process and basic math preferred.
- Ability to use simple specifications, dials, and gauges to regulate electricity and water flow.
- Specialized experience in work on electric steel furnace is preferred.
- People/leadership skills and ability to lead by example.
- 1 year of industrial or manufacturing experience including operating heavy mobile equipment.
- Flexibility to work a rotating 12 hr shift, days, nights, and weekends.

- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
- Ability to tolerate extreme ambient temperatures ranging from 0°F to 160°F.
- Ability to tolerate working in cramped quarters and at heights.
- Ability to tolerate working in areas where noise levels can reach 120 decibels.
