Overview
GovFirst is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Welder to support the maintenance and operations in Hampton, VA. This position is responsible for performing certified welding, fabrication, repairs, and modifications on tunnel equipment, machinery, structures, and roadway infrastructure while ensuring all work meets industry and safety standards.
Responsibilities
- Perform certified welding on equipment, tunnel infrastructure, roadways, buildings, structural framework, and high-pressure vessels.
- Ensure all welds meet applicable certification, quality, and safety standards.
- Weld, fabricate, and accurately cut metal components for equipment repair and structural modifications.
- Perform modifications to equipment to accommodate specialized accessories or operational requirements.
- Repair and fabricate tunnel infrastructure components including handrails, drain grates, manhole covers, roadway plates, and related structures.
- Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, technical drawings, and work specifications.
- Locate and procure materials and parts required to complete assigned work.
- Prepare repair estimates and communicate project requirements to management.
- Maintain accurate records of welding, fabrication, inspections, repairs, and completed work.
- Safely operate welding, cutting, grinding, and fabrication equipment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Respond to emergency repair situations when required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors or the USF Senior Project Manager.
Requirements
- AWS Welding Certification required.
- Knowledge of AC, DC, and arc welding techniques.
- Strong understanding of metallurgy, structural principles, welding materials, and fabrication methods.
- Experience operating MIG, TIG, stick, carbon arc, oxyacetylene, plasma cutting equipment, band saws, grinders, and other welding tools.
- Experience performing certified welding on bridges, buildings, tunnel infrastructure, high-pressure vessels, or similar structures.
- Ability to fabricate and modify components to meet engineering specifications.
- Experience performing overhead welding safely and effectively.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and technical drawings.
- Ability to weld mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and dissimilar metals.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality workmanship.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision during routine and emergency operations.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Experience maintaining accurate repair and maintenance records.
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Equivalent work experience or vocational training may be considered.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Valid Virginia Driver's License in good standing required.
- AWS D1.1 and AWS D1.5 Certifications preferred.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Fingerprint-based Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) required.
- Pre-employment drug screening required.
