Overview

The Welder position at Orion involves providing yard maintenance support through welding, cutting, grinding, and related tasks. The role emphasizes safety, quality, and teamwork, requiring collaboration with various skilled crafts persons.

Responsibilities

  • Works as assigned by the Welding Shop Foreman on marine yard support projects.
  • Gathers information on the scope of work and obtains necessary permits before starting welding projects.
  • Cuts, welds, chips, and grinds metal as required by the project.
  • Utilizes oxygen-acetylene cutting torch and related equipment for cutting metal.
  • Welds together pieces of sheet metal after individual sheet piles are driven into place.
  • Applies stick rod welding in all positions to complete jobs.
  • Rigs cable for lifting and moving objects.
  • Handles placement of steel plates and sheet piles using cranes and hand tools.
  • Operates saws, presses, drills, and grinders to fabricate parts for equipment repairs.
  • Inspects and makes minor repairs to welding equipment, notifying the Foreman of needed parts.
  • Picks up materials and supplies for project completion.
  • Collaborates closely with various team members to ensure safe and efficient project completion.
  • Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives to comply with regulations.

Requirements

  • A minimum of two years welding experience or equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Good knowledge of welding practices and materials.
  • Understanding of the physical characteristics of metals used in marine structures.
  • Knowledge of operation of various types of marine equipment.
  • Ability to pass standard welding tests demonstrating proficiency.
  • Skill in stick rod welding, acetylene and arc welding equipment, and hand/power tools.
  • Effective verbal communication skills and ability to keep records of time and materials.

  • Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
