Overview

The Maintenance Apprentice is responsible for assisting in the maintenance and repair of various machinery and equipment, gaining experience in safe work practices and trade skills in mechanical, electrical, or instrumentation maintenance. The position is with the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC), which is an equal opportunity employer that supports diversity in the workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of all types of machinery and equipment, including pumps, compressors, conveyors, and gear boxes.
  • Operate machines such as grinders, drill presses, and saws.
  • Alter and repair fixtures and tools, and sharpen tools.
  • Transport tools, materials, equipment, and supplies to work sites.

Requirements

  • High school/vocational school diploma or equivalency certificate.
  • Valid New Jersey Driver’s License.
  • Minimum two years’ experience in general maintenance.
  • Availability for emergencies and job assignments on a 24-hour basis.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and retain technical information.
  • Basic knowledge of standard tools, methods, practices, and safety precautions.

Additional Information

  • Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system.
  • Must qualify for and possess the ability to perform entry into confined spaces while wearing proper PPE.
  • Physical activities include climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs., balancing, walking, stooping, and handling heavy objects.
