Overview

The New York City Department of Correction is seeking an experienced Supervisor of Mechanics (Mechanical Equipment) to serve as Deputy Director of Fleet Maintenance and Operations. The role involves overseeing garage operations, maintenance, and repair activities while ensuring compliance with city policies.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the operation, maintenance, servicing, and repairs of all vehicles.
  • Ensure adequate supply of proper parts is maintained in all stockrooms.
  • Initiate purchase of parts and equipment.
  • Contact vendors to ensure timely repairs.
  • Prepare and track records and weekly reports for submission to the Fleet Director.
  • Manage compliance with City Policies and effective fleet management.
  • Operate motor vehicles as needed.
  • Make inspections and review work progress.
  • Act as a liaison with departmental units and outside organizations.
  • Assist and advise the Director in planning and coordinating vehicle replacement programs.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Fleet Director.

Requirements

  • Must be working for a NYC agency and be permanent in the title of Supervisor of Mechanics (Mechanical Equipment).
  • At least two years' experience as a Supervisor of Mechanics (Mechanical Equipment) is preferred.
  • Seven years of full-time satisfactory experience as an Auto Machinist, Auto Mechanic, Auto Mechanic (Diesel), Electrician (Automobile), or Machinist, with two years at a supervisory level.
  • At least five years of experience plus relevant training from an approved trade, technical or vocational high school, or relevant education in an accredited college.
  • Possession of a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York.
  • For certain positions, a Class B Commercial Driver License valid in the State of New York with no restrictions may be required.

  • New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
  • City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may be eligible to reside in nearby counties.
