Overview

The Mechanic’s Assistant at North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) supports mechanics and welders in maintaining and repairing various mechanical systems related to water, wastewater, and solid waste management. Responsibilities

  • Assist mechanics and welders in the installation, maintenance, diagnosing, and repair of pumps, motors, gear boxes, valves, piping, actuators, air compressors, and generators.
  • Support mechanics and welders in basic tasks including greasing of equipment, parts assembly and disassembly, sandblasting, grinding, and cutting.
  • Help troubleshoot and diagnose complex machinery and equipment problems.
  • Demonstrate technical aptitude with mechanical systems and components.
  • Apply principles of ASME, OSHA, AWWA, and STLE and learn about various oils and greases used in an industrial environment.
  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance and manage tools and inventory for assigned projects.
  • Conduct basic mathematical calculations.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, plans, and manufacturers’ specifications.
  • Operate industrial tools and machinery including lathes, mills, drill presses, band saws, welders, torches, plasma cutters, forklifts, and scissor lifts.
  • Learn and apply proper safety procedures and protocols.
  • Attend required trainings and stay updated on safety requirements.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve skill levels.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • TCEQ Water / Wastewater license preferred.
  • Requires a valid Texas Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to comprehend and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical principles and concepts.
  • Normal visual color discrimination.
  • Strong willingness to learn and develop skills in the industrial mechanical trade.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Physical ability to perform duties such as lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
  • Willingness to work overtime and call outs as needed.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to report to work on time and maintain a good attendance record.

Additional Information

  • Driving a District vehicle for business will be required.
  • Position requires continuous physical exertion, lifting or pulling/pushing 50 pounds daily and up to 100 pounds weekly.
  • Working conditions include exposure to high voltage electricity, inclement weather, wastewater, and various hazards.
  • May require compliance with personal protective equipment regulations.
  • Will be required to work hours other than regular schedule including overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays.
