Overview
Interstate Waste Services is a leading provider of solid waste and recycling services in the greater New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut markets. The Level B Fleet Mechanic/Technician is responsible for diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on refuse trucks and heavy equipment while mentoring Level C technicians and ensuring fleet compliance.
Responsibilities
- Independently diagnose and repair diesel and gasoline engines.
- Repair drivetrain components including clutches, transmissions, and differentials.
- Fix air and hydraulic brake systems and suspension components.
- Maintain hydraulic systems on refuse equipment.
- Troubleshoot electrical systems including starting/charging and multiplex wiring.
- Perform DOT-compliant inspections and preventive maintenance.
- Interpret and close out DVIR/eDVIR defects.
- Respond to road calls and breakdowns in the NYC tri-state area.
- Mentor Level C technicians on best practices and repair methods.
- Complete work orders capturing complaint, cause, correction, and parts used.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 3–5+ years hands-on experience as a diesel, truck, or heavy equipment mechanic.
- Valid CDL Class B (or higher) with air brake endorsement preferred.
- Proficiency with hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret OEM service manuals and wiring diagrams.
- Experience in refuse/solid waste or heavy trucking fleet preferred.
- ASE certifications in Medium/Heavy Truck or Truck Equipment preferred.
- Basic welding and cutting skills preferred.
- Familiarity with computerized fleet maintenance and parts inventory systems preferred.
