Overview
The Fleet & Equipment Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of equipment, from small engines to heavy machinery, ensuring that equipment runs efficiently to support crew productivity. This role is crucial for maintaining safety and minimizing downtime, with work primarily conducted in a shop setting and occasional field repairs.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain small engines including mowers, trimmers, edgers, blowers, and chainsaws.
- Service and repair light- and medium-duty trucks, including engines, brakes, suspension, cooling, and electrical systems.
- Maintain and repair heavy equipment such as backhoes, skid steers, skidders, chippers, mowers, trailers, and attachments.
- Troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical/12V, fuel, cooling, and drivetrain systems.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and track service intervals.
- Respond to field breakdowns and complete on-site repairs as needed.
- Maintain accurate work orders, service records, and equipment logs.
- Monitor parts inventory and coordinate parts ordering.
- Perform DOT-style safety inspections and flag equipment for major repair or replacement.
- Conduct welding and light fabrication as needed.
- Keep the shop clean, organized, and compliant with OSHA/safety standards.
Requirements
- 3+ years hands-on mechanical experience across small engines, trucks, and heavy equipment.
- Working knowledge of gas and diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
- Ability to diagnose using manuals, diagnostic tools, and experience.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Own set of hand tools; shop and specialty tools provided by BRLS.
- Able to lift 50+ lbs and work in varied shop/outdoor conditions.
- Dependable, safety-minded, and able to work with minimal supervision.
