Overview

The Plumber's Helper will assist a plumber with emergency and scheduled plumbing repairs of standpipe and sprinkler systems, including installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair tasks. This position requires travel citywide and is open to candidates with permanent civil service status in the title of Plumber's Helper.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Plumber with installation, inspection, maintenance, repair, and testing of standpipes and sprinklers.
  • Set, maintain, and repair plumbing equipment and accessories.
  • Carry tools, working material, and equipment to prepare the work location.
  • Move heavy valves and piping fixtures.
  • Cut, drill, or prepare openings for installation, maintenance, or repair.
  • Ensure a clean work area related to fire safety.
  • Perform any additional work related to fire safety and the good of the Authority.

Requirements

  • Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a plumber's helper or apprentice plumber.
  • At least one year of experience plus relevant plumbing training to equal three years of acceptable experience.
  • Apprenticeship must be recognized by the New York State Department of Labor or equivalent.
  • Schooling must be approved by a state's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization.
  • Selected candidates must possess or obtain FDNY Certificates of Fitness within 90 days of appointment.
