Overview

The Equipment Mechanic III position in TxDOT's Fleet Operations Division involves performing repair, maintenance, and inspection work on fleet vehicles and equipment. This role requires independent work on heavy equipment used in highway and bridge construction, as well as interaction with governmental agencies and contractors.

Responsibilities

• Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts including air brake and anti-locking systems.
• Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.
• Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into the fleet information management system.
• Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
• Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights, and parking lights.
• Performs preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment.
• Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
• Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits and fire extinguishers.
• Troubleshoots, tests, and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
• Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
• Trains less experienced technicians.
• Travels and performs work in other shops throughout the state as required.
• Leads and trains less experienced technicians.
• Performs duties of the Shop Coordinator in their absence.

Requirements

• No degree/diploma required.
• 7 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
• Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience.
• Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Must have a Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or obtain it within 120 calendar days from date of course registration.
