Overview

The Equipment Mechanic position is responsible for performing skilled mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and overhaul of District vehicles and equipment, ensuring compliance with safety regulations. The role requires a journeyman-level knowledge of various vehicle systems and the ability to work independently under the supervision of the Director of Maintenance, Operations and Transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of school buses, trucks, vans, and construction equipment.
  • Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance and safety inspections in compliance with CHP BIT requirements.
  • Diagnose and repair engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, and HVAC systems.
  • Repair, replace, and adjust mechanical components including bearings, pumps, hoses, and wiring.
  • Use computerized diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot electrical and automotive control systems.
  • Perform welding, fabrication, and minor body repair tasks as needed.
  • Respond to road calls and provide field service during breakdowns or emergencies.
  • Maintain accurate work orders, mileage logs, and inspection records.
  • Obtain and maintain required certifications.
  • Perform other duties consistent with job description.

Requirements

  • Journeyman-level knowledge in diesel, gasoline, electric, and alternative-fuel vehicle systems.
  • Understanding of diagnostic software, computer-based testing equipment, and electrical schematics.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and repair procedures.
  • Proficient in diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of CHP BIT inspection requirements and DOT safety standards.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid California Class B Commercial Driver's License with air brake and passenger endorsements.
  • Minimum of three years journey-level mechanic experience; school bus/heavy-duty mechanic experience preferred.
