Job Description

This is not a shipyard welding job where you spend 12 hours in a confined space breathing flux fumes under a vessel hull in 100-degree heat. This is a climate-controlled fabrication shop with proper ventilation, established safety protocols, and a production schedule that runs on two eight-hour shifts — not mandated 60-hour weeks.

This is not a job where you weld the same single joint for eight hours. Our shop fabricates structural steel assemblies, custom industrial equipment frames, and precision sheet metal components for oil and gas, commercial construction, and agricultural equipment clients. Your work varies by project and shift.

This is not a probationary contract. We hire welders as permanent, full-time employees from day one — not as 90-day temp-to-hire situations where your benefits are delayed and your status is uncertain.

About Alamo Metal Fabrication We have operated in San Antonio since 2001, serving industrial clients across South Texas with custom steel fabrication, structural assembly, and precision welding services. Our 28,000 square-foot shop runs two production shifts with a team of 45 welders across MIG, TIG, stick, and flux-core processes. Our quality is certified to AWS D1.1 structural welding standards.

What the Role Involves

  • MIG welding of structural steel frames and assemblies — primary process on most projects
  • TIG welding for stainless steel and aluminum components requiring clean, precise beads
  • Reading and interpreting welding blueprints and AWS symbols
  • Setting up and adjusting welding equipment for each material and position
  • Performing visual weld inspections before submitting to QC
  • Grinding, cleaning, and finishing weld surfaces to specification

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of structural or fabrication welding experience — MIG required, TIG preferred
  • Ability to pass a weld test in flat, horizontal, and vertical positions before hire
  • Blueprint reading capability — you need to work from drawings, not just verbal instruction
  • AWS D1.1 certification is preferred — we reimburse recertification costs

Pay and Schedule $28 to $38 per hour based on process certifications and test results. Day shift: 6 AM to 2 PM. Night shift: 2 PM to 10 PM — with $2.50 per hour shift differential. 40-hour standard week with overtime available. Health and dental insurance, 401k, and 10 days PTO from year one. Steel-toed boots and safety glasses provided. Welding helmets and PPE supplied on the floor.
