Overview
The Welder position at Orion involves providing yard maintenance support through welding, cutting, grinding, and related tasks. The role emphasizes safety, quality, and teamwork while working closely with various skilled crafts persons to complete marine yard support projects.
Responsibilities
- Work as assigned by the Welding Shop Foreman to complete marine yard support projects.
- Gather information on the scope of work and obtain necessary permits before starting welding projects.
- Cut, weld, chip, and grind metal as required by the project.
- Utilize oxygen-acetylene cutting torch and related equipment for cutting metal.
- Weld together pieces of sheet metal after individual sheet piles are driven into place.
- Stick rod weld in all positions to complete jobs.
- Rig cable for lifting and moving objects.
- Handle placement of steel plates and sheet piles using cranes, winches, and hand tools.
- Operate saws, presses, drills, and grinders to fabricate parts for equipment repair.
- Inspect and make minor repairs to welding equipment and notify the Foreman of needed parts.
- Pick up materials and supplies for project completion.
- Collaborate with the Welding Shop Foreman and other skilled crafts persons to ensure project safety and efficiency.
- Participate in safety and environmental initiatives to comply with regulations.
Requirements
- A minimum of two years welding experience or equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Good knowledge of welding practices and materials.
- Understanding of physical characteristics of various metals used in marine structures.
- Ability to operate various types of marine equipment and devices.
- Knowledge of safe work practices in a marine environment.
- Capability to pass standard welding tests demonstrating job proficiency.
- Skill in stick rod welding in all positions and using acetylene and arc welding equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret welding blueprints and sketches.
- Effective verbal communication skills and ability to keep records of time and materials.
