Overview
The City of Houston is seeking a Mechanic III for the Fleet Management Department, which aims to provide the best value fleet management services. The role involves performing maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on city vehicles while also supervising and training lower-level mechanics.
Responsibilities
- Perform preventative maintenance on light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
- Respond to complex reports on operational issues and perform diagnostics.
- Make repairs and replace failed vehicle and equipment components.
- Rebuild complex vehicle and equipment components as needed.
- Perform complex vehicle body and paint repairs.
- Service vehicles and equipment at garages and off-site locations.
- Serve as shop supervisor in the absence of the shop manager.
- Train lower-level mechanics.
- Order parts and update work orders according to department procedures.
- Use diagnostic tools and equipment for mechanical repairs.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Observe environmental and hazardous material procedures.
- Work safely and follow all safety procedures.
- Stay current on new technology.
Requirements
- High school degree, GED or equivalent.
- Four years of automotive, diesel, and/or heavy-equipment maintenance/repair experience, or an Associate’s degree in related technology plus two years of experience.
- Valid Texas Class C driver's license upon hire.
- Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6 months of employment.
- Certification as Texas State Vehicle Inspector within 6 months of employment.
- May require Emergency Vehicle Technician certification and mobile air (EPA 609) certification.
- Aptitude test may be required.
- Master ASE technician certification and/or Lean Six Sigma is preferred.
- Prior automotive supervisory and/or training experience is strongly desired.
Additional Information
- Workdays and hours are various and may require working weekends, holidays, and shifts.
- The position involves considerable physical exertion and exposure to significant levels of heat, cold, and chemical substances.
- Must furnish own hand tools.
