Overview
The Supervisor of Mechanics is responsible for supervising and directing personnel in the repair, overhaul, and maintenance of various mechanical equipment, including building systems and automotive equipment. Candidates must be serving permanently in the title or reachable on DOT's promotion list.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and direct the work of assigned personnel.
- Prepare work schedules and assignments.
- Make decisions regarding methods of work.
- Interpret mechanical drawings.
- Make inspections and check work progress.
- Perform road tests on agency vehicles.
- Make recommendations for the purchase of production machinery.
- Ensure an adequate supply of parts is maintained.
- Initiate purchases of parts and equipment.
- Contact vendors to ensure timely delivery of parts.
- Ensure equipment needs are met in the assigned area.
- Maintain and safeguard assigned equipment.
- Update and maintain reporting databases.
- Develop and implement productivity and cost-saving measures.
- Enforce health and safety precautions.
- Keep records and write reports.
- Operate motor vehicles as necessary.
Requirements
- Seven years of full-time satisfactory experience as an Auto Machinist, Auto Mechanic, Auto Mechanic (Diesel), Electrician (Automobile), or Machinist, with two years at a supervisory level.
- At least five years of relevant experience plus sufficient training or education to meet the equivalent of the remaining required experience.
- Possession of a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York.
- A Class B Commercial Driver License may be required for certain positions.

- This position is open to qualified persons with a disability eligible for the 55-a Program.
- New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
- City Employees in certain titles may be eligible to reside in specific counties after two continuous years of service.
