Overview

The Superintendent, Welding is responsible for strategic technical and resource management for welding and testing activities across the shipyard, serving as the primary contact for all welding trade construction and testing activities while reporting to the Director of Pre-Outfit.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure trade practices and procedures are safe and compliant with OSHA and BIW safety policies.
  • Lead initiatives to enhance workplace safety and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Lead the execution of all welding construction and test activities to support ship construction schedules.
  • Monitor quality and quantity of work being performed.
  • Responsible for trade cost and schedule performance.
  • Oversee Earned Value Management (EVM) and report on cost variances and corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with material control procedures.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to welding assistant superintendents and represented employees.
  • Provide feedback and lessons learned to improve future planning and execution stages.
  • Collaborate with trade and area management to assign resources and resolve deck plate issues.
  • Maintain a professional working environment within the trade.
  • Ensure fair and consistent implementation of the labor contract across the shipyard.
  • Identify and report systemic quality issues for departmental process improvement.
  • Lead execution of W12 Operations Improvement Plan.
  • Work with supporting division POCs to execute trade value stream projects.
  • Identify problems driving cost and schedule impairments and lead process improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in manufacturing, construction management, engineering or equivalent experience required.
  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of supervisory/management experience in the welding trade required.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage conflict and multiple priorities.
  • Experience with Earned Value Management System preferred.
  • Experience in labor contract administration preferred.
  • Demonstrated management, project coordination, and leadership skills required.
  • Strong written, oral communications, and organizational skills required.
  • Proficiency with computers including Microsoft Office products required.
  • Ability and willingness to work in and promote a true team environment.
