Overview
The Welder/Structure position at Newport News Shipbuilding requires certification and involves performing structural and pipe welds in ship construction using various welding processes. The company is a leading industrial employer in Virginia, specializing in the design and construction of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and submarines.
Responsibilities
- Perform structural and pipe welds in all phases of ship construction.
- Use a wide range of welding filler metals and processes.
- Conduct tack, fillet, and full penetration welding on steel foundations.
- Satisfy all nondestructive test requirements including visual and ultrasonic inspections.
- Receive additional training in certified visual inspection and troubleshooting minor welding equipment problems.
Requirements
- Must have one or more certificates of completion or diploma in Welding or a directly related field.
- Must be able to take measurements or be willing to learn.
- Must be willing to undergo a background investigation and drug screen.
- Must be able to pass a physical agility test.
- Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds and perform overhead work.
- Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and at extreme heights.
- Must be willing to work any shift and overtime as needed.
