Job Description

Overview

The position of Welder at DOTD involves working as part of the structural welding crew to fabricate, install, and repair steel bridge components. The role requires compliance with Louisiana and Civil Services laws, as well as DOTD policies, and emphasizes a commitment to public service in Louisiana.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled work at the journeyman level using acetylene torches and electric arc welding equipment.
  • Cut, braze, weld, lay out, and fabricate various metal components in the shop and field.
  • Examine rough plans to ensure proper dimensions and repair, replace, or fabricate components as necessary.
  • Make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and maintain it in good working order.
  • Operate heavy trucks and other equipment when moving from job to job.
  • Exercise functional supervision over Trades Apprentices on various jobs as needed.
  • Work unsupervised on small to medium jobs as needed.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience or training in the welding trade.
  • Completion of a Technical Diploma or Associate of Applied Science welding program from a Louisiana Technical or Community College or equivalent.

  • License Requirements: Class D License at time of appointment.
  • This position is eligible for premium pay of $2.00 extra per hour.
