Overview

The Welder position at Progress Rail involves operating hand-welding and flame-cutting equipment to join work pieces together, ensuring safety and proficiency in various welding methods. Progress Rail, founded in 1983 and part of Caterpillar Inc., is a leading provider of railroad products and services worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Pass internal welding certification in conjunction with requirements under ISO, AAR, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Retrieve materials assembled and weld into a finished product.
  • Set up components for welding according to specifications.
  • Operate angle grinders to prepare parts for welding.
  • Interpret welding blueprints, assembly instructions, drawings, JSA’s, and bills of material.
  • Maintain welding proficiency as required by Progress Rail QSP 4.9 and applicable standards.
  • Accurately use measuring devices such as tape measures, scales, and calipers.
  • Use various hand tools, pneumatic and electric powered grinders, impact wrenches, and overhead cranes.
  • Master various welds such as pipe weld, GMAW, SMAW, etc. in all positions.
  • Achieve certification to a recognized welding standard such as AWS D1.1.
  • Perform single and multi-pass welds in all positions.
  • Conduct preventative and basic maintenance of welding machines and equipment.
  • Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions.
  • Train others in welding techniques.
  • Be forklift certified.

Requirements

  • Certified Welder preferred.
  • 2-3 years of experience as a welder.
  • Knowledge of various types of welding including Mig, MMA, Stick, and Tig.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Skill Level II requires 1-2 years of experience as a welder.
  • Skill Level III requires 2-3 years of experience and certification in GMAW and FCAW preferred.
  • Skill Level IV requires 4-5 years of experience as a certified welder with additional SMAW certifications preferred.
  • Skill Level V requires 5+ years of experience as a certified welder with all previous certifications.
