Overview
The Senior/Principal Structural Engineer in Technology is responsible for leading applied research and development related to marine and offshore structures, including structural vibration assessment and offshore renewable energy. The role involves managing projects, developing technical proposals, and collaborating with government and industry funding agencies.
Responsibilities
- Identifies and proposes Technology programs and projects to manage.
- Recommends priorities for projects within Technology.
- Plans for and budgets programs and projects as assigned by management.
- Serves as a leader or key member of technical project teams.
- Ensures high-quality service delivery and maintains good relations with customers and coworkers.
- Stays informed about technical, business, and management developments affecting ABS.
- Promotes the services and capabilities of ABS throughout the technical and business community.
- Writes and presents technical papers and reports.
- Provides leadership and advice on technical expertise to Technology and Engineering staff.
- Develops suggested Rule changes and provides expert advice on Rules and Regulations.
- Ensures compliance with ABS Quality System requirements.
- Performs selected engineering reviews and analyses.
Requirements
- B.S. degree in Naval Architecture, Civil/Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering or related disciplines; M.S. or Ph.D. preferred.
- Strong background in marine and offshore structures.
- Minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, university, or classification society preferred.
- Professional or chartered engineer license.
- Ability to lead project bidding and execution.
- Ability to read engineering plans and understand shipbuilding practices.
- Essential technical writing skills and experience in preparing formal reports.
- Knowledge of applicable Rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of company business policies and procedures.
- Human relations skills to maintain positive relationships with clients and peers.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
- Ability to develop and implement logical solutions to complex problems.
- Ability to undertake short- and long-term planning.
- Working knowledge of ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.

Additional Information
- Work will generally be performed in an air-conditioned office environment.
- Occasional visits to manufacturing plants, remote field sites, or marine vessels are required.
- Work is non-manual, but the incumbent must be able to walk and climb among equipment and structures.
