Overview
The Pavement Shift Worker operates a pavement sweeper under the supervision of the Pavement Supervisor, removing debris from public roadways, parking lots, and airfields. The role involves responding to emergencies, assisting with minor repairs, and operating snow and ice removal equipment during winter weather events.
Responsibilities
- Assist other departments on tasks involving public roadways, parking lots, runways, and taxiways.
- Respond to emergency situations such as vehicle accidents to assist DPS.
- Respond to calls regarding debris or trash in roadways or parking lots.
- Recover lost items in storm drain inlets.
- Perform minor pothole repair using cold patch asphalt.
- Set or move cones, barricades, or signage.
- Conduct minor fence, guardrail, and attenuator repairs.
- Empty public trash containers.
- Operate a pavement sweeper to clean roadways, parking lots, runways, and taxiways.
- Assist and coordinate with Airfield Operations on runway closures.
- Operate snow and ice removal equipment during winter weather events.
- Assist with excavating, repairing, and maintaining concrete and asphalt surfaces.
- Setup and maintain traffic control devices to create a safe work site.
- Be on call to respond to emergency situations requiring assistance.
- Clean, organize, and restock inventory of materials.
- Perform maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
Requirements
- Completion of high school curriculum or equivalent, or one year of experience.
- Possession of a valid Class B commercial driver’s license or ability to obtain it.
- Ability to work rotating shift assignments.
- Must pass a medical physical examination.
- Good private driving record with no more than two moving violations in the last 36 months.
- Knowledge of safety precautions in working with hot asphalt and operating road machinery.
- Ability to operate a variety of powered and mobile equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral instructions and communicate clearly over two-way radio.
Additional Information
- This is a designated Essential Employee position.
- Works outdoors for extended periods in inclement weather.
