Overview
The Sr. Manufacturing Engineer for Chassis Fabrication is the technical authority on structural steel fabrication processes, overseeing the entire process from raw steel to completed structural frames. This role involves leading the manufacturing engineering staff and ensuring the fabrication line meets throughput requirements.
Responsibilities
- Own all fabrication process standards including cutting, drilling, coping, fit-up, tack welding, weld sequencing, distortion control, and post-weld treatment.
- Design and document fabrication work instructions to meet AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code requirements.
- Establish and maintain the welding procedure specification library and ensure all production welders are qualified per AWS D1.1.
- Define and control fit-up tolerances for corner casting placement.
- Own the fabrication quality plan including in-process inspection points and weld inspection criteria.
- Conduct fabrication takt time analysis to measure cycle times and identify bottlenecks.
- Lead root-cause analysis on fabrication defects and dimensional nonconformances.
- Evaluate new fabrication equipment and processes and develop capital justification for improvements.
- Support robotic weld cell integration including weld path programming and quality verification.
- Maintain the AWS D1.1 structural welding program including WPS/PQR library and inspection records.
- Own the material traceability program including mill cert verification and heat/lot tracking.
Requirements
- 8+ years of manufacturing engineering experience, with at least 5 years focused on structural steel fabrication in a high-volume production environment.
- Deep technical knowledge of structural steel fabrication processes including various welding techniques and CNC operations.
- Working knowledge of AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code including WPS development and welder qualification.
- Experience designing fabrication work instructions, welding procedures, and quality plans.
- Demonstrated track record of improving fabrication throughput and reducing defect rates.
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential is a plus.
- Experience with robotic welding integration for structural steel is a plus.
- Background in AISC fabrication standards is a plus.
- Six Sigma Green Belt or equivalent is a plus.
