Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Manufacturing Engineer to lead and optimize structural steel fabrication operations in a high-volume manufacturing environment. This individual will serve as the technical expert for fabrication processes, ensuring quality, efficiency, and scalability across various operations.
Responsibilities
- Own and develop fabrication process standards for cutting, drilling, coping, fit-up, welding, distortion control, and post-weld finishing activities.
- Create, maintain, and improve manufacturing work instructions, process documentation, and welding procedures in compliance with AWS D1.1 standards.
- Manage Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and welder qualification programs.
- Establish dimensional control and fit-up requirements to ensure high-quality structural assemblies and consistent product accuracy.
- Develop and maintain fabrication quality plans, inspection points, and acceptance criteria.
- Analyze manufacturing cycle times, productivity metrics, and throughput performance to identify process improvements.
- Lead root cause investigations related to fabrication defects, weld quality concerns, and dimensional deviations.
- Implement corrective and preventive actions to reduce rework, improve efficiency, and enhance product quality.
- Evaluate and introduce new manufacturing technologies, equipment, tooling, and automation solutions.
- Support robotic welding initiatives, including fixture design, process validation, and quality verification.
- Maintain compliance with AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code requirements.
- Oversee welding documentation, qualification records, inspection programs, and fabrication standards.
- Manage material traceability programs, including mill certifications, heat/lot tracking, and production documentation.
- Collaborate with Quality, Production, and Supply Chain teams to ensure manufacturing and quality objectives are achieved.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Welding Engineering, or related field preferred.
- 8+ years of manufacturing engineering experience with at least 5 years supporting structural steel fabrication operations.
- Strong knowledge of structural steel manufacturing processes including welding, cutting, drilling, coping, and assembly.
- Experience with SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and SAW welding processes.
- Working knowledge of AWS D1.1 including WPS development, PQR testing, welder qualifications, and weld inspection requirements.
- Demonstrated success improving manufacturing throughput, reducing scrap, and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
- Experience developing manufacturing procedures, quality plans, and fabrication standards.
- Strong problem-solving, project management, and cross-functional leadership skills.
