Overview

The Equipment Mechanic III position involves senior-level work in diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and vehicles. The role requires advanced skills in mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems, along with a commitment to safety and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses, maintains, repairs and overhauls all City-owned gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and construction equipment.
  • Repairs electrical and electronic systems including engine controls, accessories, lighting, and fuel systems.
  • Repairs air, hydraulic and electric brake systems, suspensions, chassis, steering, and tires.
  • Repairs heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems, transmissions, clutches, and drive shafts.
  • Cleans, lubricates, adjusts and repairs mechanical components of equipment.
  • Welds and fabricates parts for damaged vehicles and construction equipment.
  • Assists and guides less experienced mechanics in proper operation and maintenance of vehicles.
  • Maintains work tools and equipment and completes repair orders online.
  • Cleans and maintains the shop area for safety and efficiency.
  • Test operates and drives equipment and vehicles as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or higher.
  • Five or more years of journeyman level experience in gasoline or diesel engine maintenance and repair.
  • Valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
  • Willingness to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes endorsement within 6 months.
  • Possession of vehicle mechanic tools and cabinet.
  • Willingness to obtain forklift operator’s certification, air conditioning EPA certification, and Underground Storage Tank Class C Certification within 6 months.
  • Preferred possession of an Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification.
  • Thorough knowledge of repair methods, materials, tools, and techniques for vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair complex defects and troubleshoot mechanical problems.

Additional Information

  • Standard shift is 8 hours Monday through Friday with required overtime based on workload.
  • Seasonal overtime due to weather conditions is mandatory in emergency situations.
