Overview
The Mechanic Assistant at Barnard College provides semi-skilled support in a designated Trade Shop, assisting Trade Mechanics with various tasks while ensuring a safe and functional work environment. The role involves preparing work areas, maintaining equipment, and adhering to safety protocols.
Responsibilities
- Assist designated Trade Mechanics in performing various duties.
- Maintain the designated Trade Shop in a safe and functional manner.
- Conduct supply inventory for the Trade Shop, including PPE and first aid supplies.
- Assist in preparing for scheduled work assignments and accompany the Mechanic to work locations.
- Carry out work assignments under the direction of a trade mechanic or supervisor.
- Erect and dismantle rigs, scaffolds, and ladders as needed.
- Clean and maintain surface areas of work locations.
- Perform assigned work tasks in accordance with standard trade practices.
- Perform daily clean-up of the work area and minimize dust and debris.
- Respond to facilities-related emergencies and work overtime as needed.
- Work with limited or no supervision and cover campus-wide shifts.
- Perform repairs in mechanical rooms or typical campus facilities as needed.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and organizational procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school graduate or GED.
- Capable of using general hand and power tools.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a mechanical job.
- Ability to read and write English and follow oral and written instructions.
- Able to bend, stoop, push, pull, lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to climb stairs and work in high altitudes.
Additional Information
- Work schedule is Tuesdays to Saturdays, 3:30 PM to 11:30 PM.
- Regular days off are Sunday and Monday.
- There is a 180-day probationary period.
