Overview

This position is for a Welder at the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, located in Portsmouth, Virginia. The role involves welding various components of ships and other maritime equipment, contributing to the Coast Guard's mission.

Responsibilities

• Weld various components of ships including the shell, engine parts, framing, and tanks.
• Remove and replace interferences in way of welds.
• Fit brackets, machinery foundations, and minor structural braces.
• Take fire and safety precautions while welding.
• Adjust welding controls to maintain qualified welding procedures.
• Apply knowledge of manual welding processes and difficult welds.
• Work with various welding methods including gas metal-arc and shielded metal arc welding.
• Understand welding standards and the reactions of different metals to welding processes.
• Read blueprints, sketches, and online drawings for component layout.

Requirements

• Knowledge of a wide range of manual welding processes.
• Experience with various welding methods such as oxyacetylene and plasma-arc.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
• Familiarity with different metals and alloys and their welding characteristics.
