Overview
This National Guard position is for a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT) (TITLE 32) at the AASF located in West Jordan, Utah. The role involves performing sheet metal maintenance on aircraft and components, and is open to current National Guard members and the public willing to join or transfer.
Responsibilities
- Inspect and troubleshoot aircraft structures such as fuselage, tail, wings, cowlings, and stabilizers.
- Determine the nature and extent of repairs using applicable Technical Manuals.
- Remove, fabricate, repair, modify, and install parts and assemblies using hand or powered tools.
- Fit and trim components to aircraft such as loading gear doors, ailerons, and flaps.
- Perform fabrication of locally manufactured items required for facility support.
- Align component structures and airframe using precision optical measuring instruments.
- Repair cracks in aircraft skin and fabricate patches to retain or restore original strength.
- Install various types of aircraft rivets and fasteners using pneumatic riveters and other tools.
- Perform metal to metal bonding where delamination occurs.
- Inspect for corrosion and eliminate conditions by chemical treatment or material replacement.
- Inspect, repair, fabricate, and replace honeycomb and fiberglass structural assemblies.
- Set up, operate, and maintain metal working equipment and tools.
- Work from blueprints, technical manuals, diagrams, and work orders.
- Prepare and design layout, dies, jigs, and templates for fabrication and repair.
- Participate in the safety program for the sheet metal function.
- Perform on-the-job training and evaluate training effectiveness.
- Assist in requisitioning and identifying stock material, parts, and equipment.
- Maintain records and make entries on log book forms.
- Assist in other functions within the Component Repair Shop as needed.
Requirements
- Thorough knowledge of ferrous and nonferrous metal.
- Mechanical drawing and shop mathematics skills.
