Overview

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is the nation's largest municipal sanitation agency, responsible for keeping New York City healthy, safe, and clean. The Metal Work Mechanic role involves fabricating, assembling, and installing structural metal components for automotive equipment and public structures under supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, assemble, and install structural metal components for automotive equipment and public structures.
  • Lay out jobs from drawings, samples, and written descriptions.
  • Make patterns and templates.
  • Cut, drill, forge, burn, weld, braze, and use other metal work processes.
  • Use hand and powered tools and welding, burning, and brazing equipment.
  • Perform specialized and structural welding and rigging as required.
  • Direct the work of assigned personnel.
  • Maintain records and make reports.
  • Operate motor vehicles.

Requirements

  • Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a journeyman/journeywoman metalwork mechanic, blacksmith, or welder.
  • At least three years of experience plus sufficient training from an approved trade or vocational high school.
  • A valid Welder's License issued by the New York City Department of Buildings certified for Class I Shop and Field.
  • A Certificate of Fitness 'Type G38' or 'Type G95' Torch Use of O-2 Combustion Gas from the New York City Fire Department.
  • A Class C Commercial Driver License with a Hazardous Materials endorsement valid in the State of New York.

  • This position is open to qualified persons with a disability eligible for the 55-a Program.
  • New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
  • City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may be eligible to reside in certain counties.
