Overview

The Auto Body Repair Technician at an auto dealership is responsible for repairing and restoring damaged vehicle bodies to their original condition. This role involves structural repair, cosmetic work, and customer interaction, ensuring vehicles are safe and aesthetically pleasing upon completion.

Responsibilities

• Inspect damaged vehicles to determine the extent of the damage, estimate repair costs, and document required parts and labor.
• Remove and replace damaged body parts using hand and power tools.
• Repair damaged panels by hammering out or patching dents, removing rust, and filling depressions with body filler.
• Perform structural and frame alignment using specialized equipment.
• Weld, rivet, or bond replacement panels and components into place.
• Prepare repaired surfaces for painting by grinding, sanding, and masking areas.
• Assist with or perform the application of primer, paint, and clear coat.
• Inspect and test repaired vehicles for proper functioning and quality.
• Communicate with the parts department to order necessary components.
• Document all work performed on repair orders accurately.
• Interact with customers and insurance adjusters to explain repairs and address concerns.
• Operate all equipment safely and adhere to regulations regarding hazardous waste disposal.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent required; vocational certificate or associate degree in automotive body repair technology preferred.
• Previous experience in an auto body repair shop setting is highly desirable.
• ASE Certification or I-CAR certification is a plus and may be required for advancement.
• Proficiency in using a wide range of hand and power tools.
• Strong knowledge of automotive repair techniques, welding, and refinishing.
• Basic understanding of vehicle mechanics and systems.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
• Good communication and customer service skills.
• Effective time management and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Physical stamina, manual dexterity, and ability to lift heavy parts and equipment.

• Work is performed indoors in a body shop environment, which can be noisy and may involve exposure to dust, fumes, and paint.
