Overview

Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking a Welder Helper with flux-core (FCAW) welding certifications to support operations in Norfolk, VA. The role involves welding metal components, interpreting blueprints, and performing various welding processes under minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Weld together metal components of products as specified by blueprints and instructions.
• Interpret and lay out blueprints, check and fit materials, and tack weld small assemblies.
• Erect units and install structural items on ship ways.
• Prepare all material surfaces to be welded.
• Complete weld processes in various positions.
• Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment using multiple welding processes.
• Clean or degrease weld joints or work pieces.
• Set up and operate welding equipment and select proper electrodes.
• Perform grinding and joint preparation for NDT processes.
• Read and understand Chemist and Competent Persons reports for safety.
• Wear personal protective equipment as required.
• Instruct apprentices and fellow welders.
• Maintain a high level of first pass through rate on production welding inspections.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Must have a Certificate of Welding from an accredited institution or at least one year of welding experience.
• Must have OSHA 10 certification.
• Must be able to work overtime and weekends as required.
• Must be able to work effectively and efficiently with others.
• Must have the ability to enter and move through manholes to work in confined spaces.
• Must be a steady and reliable worker with consistent attendance.
• Must be able to follow instructions.
• Recent completion of an accredited welding program resulting in flux-core (FCAW) welding certifications is highly preferred.
